rodents are carriers of many dangerous diseasesRats and mice perfectly fit unhygienic conditions

Worldwide, rats and mice can transmit about 35 diseases. In Serbia, not all are present, only a few.

These infections carried by rats and mice can be transmitted to humans DIRECTLY:

  • By touching the rodent
  • Contact with feces, urine, saliva, or bites from the rodent
  • Inhaling dust or traces left by the rodent.

or INDIRECTLY:

  • Through ticks, mites, various domestic animals, or fleas that have been in contact with rodents.
  • Contaminating food and spaces we move in or live in.

THE MOST COMMON DISEASES AND VIRUSES THAT RATS AND MICE CAN TRANSMIT ARE:

LEPTOSPIROSIS

Leptospirosis is most commonly contracted by professional workers performing the following jobs: farmers, fishermen, veterinarians, crop growers, livestock breeders, miners, workers in slaughterhouses, workers in wet areas, but many infected individuals contracted it through recreational activities related to water where rodents were present or passed through.

The disease in humans usually occurs in late summer and early autumn when the reproduction and movement of rodents are at their highest level. The mortality rate is very low.

From 2000 to 2006, 211 people were infected with leptospirosis in Serbia, and 14 died. Most of the infected and deceased belong to the working-age male population aged 20 to 60 years.

HANTAVIRUS - HEMORRHAGIC FEVER

Symptoms similar to the flu.

In former Yugoslavia, there were seven epidemics of hemorrhagic fever. These were epidemics with 100 to 200 infected individuals, with a mortality rate of up to 16 percent.

The occurrence of hantavirus in Serbia is not common, but weak epidemics occur from time to time.

SALMONELLA

A well-known bacterium that most commonly causes illness in humans due to poorly prepared food (undercooked meat, eggs, fruits, and vegetables, etc.) contaminated with bacteria.

Salmonella is the most common intestinal infectious disease in Serbia, with a total of 624 cases registered in 2020.

One of the carriers of salmonella is rodents, both directly, through direct transmission to food, and indirectly through other domestic animals used in human nutrition.

Infection can also be transmitted through the hands of an infected person working on food preparation, contaminated utensils, or surfaces.

Salmonella is not life-threatening; however, in people with weakened immune systems, children, pregnant women, and the elderly, situations can arise that are life-threatening.

Salmonellosis is a disease in humans and animals caused by bacteria from the genus Salmonella, with many subspecies known.

FEVER DUE TO RAT BITE OR SODOKU (IN JAPANESE RAT POISON "SO" = RAT; "DOKU" =POISON)

This disease can be transmitted by bite, scratch, or contact with an infected rat, and it is specific that the first symptoms appear only after the wound has healed.

Symptoms are similar to the flu. A very rare virus, as the rat will be more afraid of you than you are of it; however, there have been situations where it attacks when it feels there is nowhere to escape. Each year, between 150,000 and 200,000 people fall ill from this disease, which is characteristic of tropical and subtropical areas. The mortality rate is very low if untreated.

TULAREMIA

Tularemia is primarily a disease of wild animals, mainly rodents, and is similar to typhus. In water and moist soil, the bacteria can survive for several months, and on the skin of dead rodents with tularemia for even longer. It causes a greater number of clinically different forms, most of which are accompanied by chills, fever, elevated temperature, headaches, muscle and joint pain, and malaise. Tularemia does not spread from person to person, so its contagiousness is very low. It can spread directly through contact with rodents, drinking or swimming in contaminated water, or inhaling contaminated surfaces.

In our country, it is rare, but individual cases of tularemia have been registered in Vojvodina, Pčinja district. From 1998 to 2011, 113 people with tularemia were analyzed in Serbia. In treated cases, the mortality rate is practically zero, while in untreated cases, it is 6%. Men of middle age are more frequently affected, as they are more exposed to infection caused by hunting, skinning, and working with meat from infected animals, as well as working in laboratories with rodents.

LISTERIA

The annual incidence of listeriosis worldwide is estimated to be about 4 cases per million inhabitants (Wikipedia). It is rare in Serbia. Listeriosis is caused by Listeria, a type of bacteria usually found in water, soil, and feces. People become infected when they consume food containing this bacterium. While in healthy adults listeria causes relatively mild symptoms, the disease can be serious in sensitive individuals (newborns, pregnant women, elderly people).

Listeria is classified among the most significant pathogens, with the highest mortality rate among the affected. 20% to 30% of clinical infections end in death, and 22% of listeria infections during pregnancy result in miscarriage. It is rare

TOXOPLASMA GONDI

Toxoplasma gondii is widely distributed. About 10-20% of people are infected with toxoplasmosis, but only a very small number develop the disease. It is most commonly acquired through undercooked food. This parasite can be dangerous to the fetus if a woman becomes infected during pregnancy, as well as for individuals with weakened immune systems. Otherwise, cats are the most common carriers, but so are rodents.

PLAGUE

Although today "the plague belongs to history," we must mention it, as there are individual cases in some remote parts of the world. A disease that has claimed millions of lives throughout human history. It is less known that the plague spread more than two centuries ago in the territory of present-day Serbia.

IN ADDITION TO SPREADING DISEASES AND ENDANGERING THE HEALTH OF ALL PEOPLE AND PETS, RATS CAN ALSO CAUSE SIGNIFICANT MATERIAL DAMAGE

  1. They damage property by constant gnawing. They chew on floor beams, pipes, doors, and windows. Rats will also shred almost anything for their nest, from paper to fabric and plastic.
  2. They cause structural damage to wood, insulation, and other building materials.
  3. They gnaw on electrical wires and increase the risk of fire and electric shock - analyses estimate that damage from rats and mice causes about 20-25% of undetermined fires in homes and buildings every year in the USA.
  4. They destroy furniture.
  5. They destroy books, papers, and clothing.
  6. They destroy your crops, fruits, land, and plantings.
  7. They create unpleasant sounds and noise that make it difficult to sleep or relax in your home.
  8. They make nests in your homes, yards, houses, walls, sinks, or even in refrigerators or other electrical appliances.

THERE ARE NUMEROUS WAYS TO PREVENT THESE PESTS AND PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THEM

Preventive measures include avoiding and preventing rats from penetrating human habitats.

We suggest you read a short text and find out

8 simplest ways to protect yourself from rodents.

If preventive measures fail, rodent control measures are there to completely suppress the harmful rat population and reduce it to a minimum.

The most effective are chemical measures, and for this reason, our team uses

rodenticides

, or colloquially, rat and mouse poisons, which must have a delayed effect of several days.

The most effective and safest way to get rid of rats and mice is to use rodenticides -Brodisan MM-25. All our rodenticides contain the bitter substance Bitrex® which causes vomiting (aversion) in humans and animals, while it does not provoke any reaction in rodents towards the bait.

Setting the bait is repeated as long as the targeted rodents take it. When they stop taking it, it means they are no longer in the vicinity. More than 90% of individuals die in their burrows, and death occurs between the third and sixth day.
